Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency is seeking an experience technician to fill the role of Discharge Technician. The Discharge tech at CARE is responsible for assisting veterinary technicians/assistants in the preparation and discharge or departure of patients from the hospital. The Discharge tech will work with specialty departments to facilitate their discharges as well as help maintain the discharge schedule in Instinct. These patients are those that the doctor has already provided thorough discharges over the phone or by email prior to the owner arriving at CARE. The discharge assistant will ensure the patient is clean, has an appropriately sized and clean Elizabethan collar, if necessary, all personal belongings (leash, collar, bedding, etc.), and medications have been filled by the service. All medications are to be verified by the discharge technician for accuracy and consistency with regards to the labels and the medication list in the discharges. They will then transport the pet to the owner. The discharge tech should assist with answering questions the owner has within their ability and knowledge of the service. Although, they should defer any advanced medical questions to the service.  In addition, the Discharge assistant will facilitate owner visitations of hospitalized patients, following the previously established visitation guidelines.

Shifts Available:

  • 12:00 pm-10:00 pm on a 2 and 5 rotation (work 2 days, have 2 days off, work 5 days, have 5 days off) This is a consistent schedule. You would either be on the Monday/Tuesday day team or the Wednesday /Thursday team, having the opposite days off, you would then rotate working Friday-Sunday every other week. 

Skills/Abilities:

  • Able to communicate empathy and reassurance over the phone, and confidently address pet owner’s concerns
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed.
  • Passion for learning and gaining comprehensive understanding of procedures, protocols, and common client questions associated with the medical services
  • Navigates fast-paced environments with ease
  • Ability to remain calm during highly charged situations.  Demonstrated experience in effectively de-escalating situations.
  • Ability to present oneself in a genuine and compassionate manner.
  • Flexible attitude and work habits

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assess patients for readiness to go home.
  • Clean, brush out and/or wash as needed prior to discharge. 
  • Clean e-collar if leaving with one. 
  • Check to make sure the patient has IV catheter removed. 
  • Write when next meds are due on med list. 
  • Review Instinct and write down the times the pet last eliminated and was fed.
  • Wait until the client has been checked out and take patient to the client.

Requirements:

  • 5-years experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician or equivalent work experience (required)
  • 2- years’ experience as an Emergency Veterinary Technician (required)
  • The ability to lift up to 40 lbs unassisted
  • Self-motivated- is able to see what needs to be done and do it with limited direction from others
  • The restraint of  patients in a safe manner
  • The ability to stoop, bend and kneel

Physical Demands:

  • This is an administrative heavy position, but one could expect to occasionally assist clinical technicians with patient care. Work is performed in a clinical/hospital setting, remote work is not available at this time.
